Classic Heart Attack Symptoms
- Chest pain or pressure (feels like an elephant sitting on your chest)
- Pain radiating to left arm, jaw, neck, or back
- Shortness of breath
- Cold sweats
- Nausea or vomiting
- Lightheadedness
Women’s Heart Attack Symptoms
Women are more likely to experience “atypical” symptoms: extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety, indigestion or heartburn-like pain, back or jaw pain, and flu-like symptoms. These are often dismissed or misdiagnosed.
What to Do
If you suspect a heart attack, call emergency services immediately. Chew an aspirin (325mg) while waiting — this can reduce heart damage by 25%. Do NOT drive yourself to the hospital.
Reducing Your Risk
Know your numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar), don’t smoke, exercise regularly, eat a heart-healthy diet, manage stress, and get regular checkups after age 40.
